West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists (WVBEP)
The practice of psychology and the use of the title psychologist have been defined and regulated in West Virginia statues found in CHAPTER 30 - Article 21 (psychology) PROFESSIONS AND OCCUPATIONS in the state code. The WV Board of Examiners of Psychologists is the regulatory body which oversees the practice of psychology. Questions with regard to supervision, credentialing, or the status of any person who claims to be authorized to render psychological services (evaluation, assessment or testing, psychotherapy, psychological consultation) should be addressed to the Board of Examiners in Psychology. PO Box 3955, Charleston, WV 25339-3955; phone (304) 558-3040; FAX (304) 558-0608; email wvpsychologybd@mail.state.wv.us.
WVPA is NOT the West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists
Many consumers and psychologists confuse WVPA with the WV Board of Examiners. The West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists (often referred to as the State Board) is the entity that regulates the practice of psychology, and oversees the licensure of psychologists, psychological practitioners, and supervised psychologists. In other words, the WV BOE is the licensing and regulatory board. Members of the Board of Examiners are appointed by the Governor. Their primary concern is the protection of the public.
The West Virginia Psychological Association is a voluntary, non- profit 501 (c)(6) organization, registered with the Secretary of State's Office, whose primary focus is to advocate for its members, and to provide them with supportive services such as continuing education. WVPA's Board is elected by its membership. WVPA has no role in policing the practice of psychology.
